I just don't seem to get everywhere I want, and it's been like this for MONTHS now, damn.
DMB isn't my best meta anyway ;)
What I wanted to say, is that the family has been stuck in playing the very same roles for years years and more years: John as the stern father/drill sergeant, Dean as the second in command, Sam as the baby in the family.
At the end, Sam is the one the grows up for real, leaving his family. Dean and John keep sticking to their roles, leader and follower, and it's only in DMB that we see how Dean, by contrasting John, changes from a puppy into a dog of his own, from follower to team-mate. And then, John can finally 'grow up' as well, knowing that his kids can act on their own, that they don't really need him anymore. So he can give up the sergeant act and revers back to being their father, and become - and accepting them - as team mates instead of children.
