SPN 03 01 quick reaction
Oct. 5th, 2007 03:06 amBehind the cut, of course. Just a quick reaction, because it's ten to 3 am here and I'm dying on my feet.
I wanted to say, I'm glad that SPN is back, I was looking forward to it. This time, after the first spoilers bubbled up, I decided to stay away from spoilers as much as possible - I'll look at promo pics, I'll watch the previews on the CW site, I'm fine with eps titles, but that's it. Thing is, without John Winchester...is not the same for me. I do love the boys, I do. But John Winchester is sorely missed, and his absence takes away part of my squee.
Anyway...
Tamara= lovely Brit actress, kicking ass hunter, why couldn't SHE be the recurring female hunter of the season, why WHY? She's been hunting for 8 years, loses her husband hunter, she's great looking and I hope to see her back.
The boys= in great shape, both of them :) Dean, daredevil, I'm-gonna-die Dean is too awesome for words. Sam, all controlled and then letting it go, facing Dean about his attitude, it's a great Sam too. I'm looking forward to see what they will do with Sam's half-demon blood, and I appreciate very much that TPTB didn't jump on it right away - it's also awesome that we got some inkling of Sam being known amongst the black eyed demons (they do have a Demons Mail newspaper, don't they? ;) although I hoped for a moment that Demon!Meg might be mentioned, or even John Winchester's time spent in Hell...*sighs*
Bobby= I like Bobby. Bobby rocks. Still, I hate the idea of him as a father figure. Okay? Don't mention it around him, I migh hiss at you. Easy to be all cuddly and helpful, it's not as if he's been looking after the boys all these years, is it? *growls*
the Plot= cool enough. the ep actually seemed to be very short, I may have liked a bit more ...something, I can't pinpoint it, really. I need to rewatch it. But I like the 7 Sins idea. My instinc would have been to have a couple of the Sins escape so to use them in another ep, but I guess there's enough meat on the fire already, what the Killing-Demons Blade, which brings me to...
New Female Hunter and recurring character= hair and make-up? all WRONG. Jo was MUCH better, more natural in appearance. Long hair in a fight? Big NO. It just IS NOT PRACTICAL and/or SAFE, dammit. Otherwise, intriguing character. Her one line was trite, imo, very Buffy/Veronica Mars like, but the delivery was good. I liked her following Sammy and disappearing at the right moment/occasion. Please, please, actress, PTB, SOMEONE! TELL THEM THAT LONG, PERFECTLY COIFFEURED HAIR ARE WRONG!
I miss John Winchester.
I won't stop saying it.
But the boys are baaaaaacck!!!!! :D

Date: 2007-10-05 02:33 am (UTC)yes, I know that JDM is liked on the SPN set, I know that he likes it too, but with his career going on as it is, I can't see him really coming back ever...although, even a couple of eps would be FANTASTIC, and even a ghost!John would make me happy, not to mention a flashback!
But there was something, in John's character, in his presence and in his absence, that was more than the sum of his lines/screen time.
I suppose, John's influence is all over the boys, in so many different ways, and that counts for something...but it's hard not to resent Bobby's presence, harder when in fact I do like the character, especially when he's defined as a 'father figure'. Not to mention Kripke's fauz pas in the latest interview. *shakes head*
::clings too::
I will have to write more John Winchester fic and read less LJ entries. It seems only fair.

Date: 2007-10-05 02:34 am (UTC)but, hey, there's gonna be flashbacks, so maybe he'll be back?
plus: the new hunter? not sure about her yet. because i'm not sure about them adding anymore girl characters because haven't they learned their lesson from jo?
where's ellen, btw?but tamara? seemed cool. as soon as i saw her, i was like, "i like her. she's british." <333

I loved her in As If, and then Torchwood (though that was a brief appearance only). And yay, she lives! I hope she'll make another appearance.
the new hunter..meh. I'd love a more distinctive look. She is pretty, and what have you, but pretty in that Hollywood standard way. I did love that she followed Sam then disappeared at the right moment.
You can write about 20plus years of John and the boys!!!! I liek Boby, but not as much as papa, sigh :(

Date: 2007-10-05 02:55 am (UTC)Bobby is cool (though I like Dodger's version better than Kripke's)and a great guy and I have nothing against him, especially when he spikes the beer with holy water. But think for a second about Bobby's scenes tonight, especially when he was yelling at the girl... Think of how John would have been in that scene, delivering those same lines... *sigh* I miss that growl.
For me, and I know many people disagree with me, the central spoke, the underpinning of the show was John and the boys' relationship and the dynamic of the whole Winchester family. Without that, something does indeed seem missing.
And I COMPLETELY agree about the hair! It's SO a guy thing.

Date: 2007-10-05 11:44 am (UTC)JDM is busy working. Remember that. It's his schedule, more than anything else. They can opt him, like they did last year, but then an option is not a contract...I too would LOVE John re-appearing in the series, and I think Kripke's words were quite a bad choice, but, alas, what are we to do? *sighs*
Yes, Bibby is cool, but I too thought, all that yelling, that should have been John. But you know what? I'm pretty sure, if it had been John, the fandom would all be in arms and 'poor tamara', that man (John) is an unsensitive, careless bastard and so on. But since it's Bobby, Bobby rocks. *is grumpy*
We could send postcards with the postcard campaign..I had this idea, but it takes a little time to put it into working: to make a kind of poster design about SPN, of course, but focused on John, because ;) then divide the design in postcard size bits, count them, find equal number of volunteers that would download each a piece, paste it on a card and send it, so that it's like a puzzle that the production has to put together. It doesn't need to be huge, at all - where would they put it otherwise, and everyone should write on her own card, piece N of X (N being the number of the card, X being the total). It would amuse them, I think, getting the pieces and putting them together, and the final image might all be about John!
What d'you think?

Date: 2007-10-05 01:27 pm (UTC)And the general fandom's reaction to John yelling at that 'poor girl'? You have that pegged for SURE.
I LOVEthe idea of the puzzle. I'm just not sure a busy production team would TAKE the time to put it together. And you know what people are like, the easier it is for them to get involved the better. The less they have to actually do, the more likely they are to do it.
I suggested that people put the picture I currently have as my default icon and put THAT on a postcard. NUMBERS always count.... and all they'd have to do is sign it and post it.
How are you feeling now, by the way! Better I hope *HUGS*

I'm glad someone else thinks this. I like Bobby too. I just thought - there may have been too much of him in this episode. I don't want them to overuse him and thus ruin him. And totally agree that it's easier for Bobby to nice to the boys when he didn't have to put up with their whining for 20
years. *g*
And I also hope we see Tamara again. I was so glad she lived, I thought for sure she was gonna die when she attacked her demon husband. Plus, she had stylish, yet practical hair. (I have no opinion on the new girl, except that I think she looks a bit like Kristen Bell.)

Date: 2007-10-05 11:36 am (UTC)Yes, I'm happy too that I'm not the only one thinking that about Bobby - who seems to me to have much taken an anti-John place in large part of the fandom's heart.
Yes, a bit too much of him in this episode, I agree. Yes, series change and evolve, that's unavoidable, and hope I'll like this season as much as the previous two, but I miss season one, there was more...I don't know...investigating? Or maybe it was me, looking at with starry eyed longing ;)
bobby is a great character - I'd love a "Bobby remembers how he first met John Winchester" ep, for example. And I do understand that if JDM has better offers, he'll do something else, so no point in hoping for John's presence. It may happen, but it'll be a real rare combination of planets to make it happen, methinks.
However...if there's going to be more Bobby, then I want to see more Ellen, too. And Jo. And GORDON! (a personal favourite) And Tamara, she was great :D
The actress, Caroline Chikezie was a favourite of mine is a teenage 9sort of) tv series a few years ago, As If, much worth watching :)

eeek, sorry, I'm rambling on ;) guess I am excited about SPN, still, some.
the new girl...I just wish they'd give her a more personalised 'look' (like Tamara had). A practical ponytail would have been great, for example. As you said, she's a bit KBell-like, which is a sort of stylised average young pretty actress Hollywood look. It works for Bell, but...
:)

Date: 2007-10-05 02:56 pm (UTC)I was disappointed we didn't hear even a, "oh yeah, Ellen's doing alright after her place of business BLEW UP." Oh well, at least there's still a chance of seeing her.

Date: 2007-10-06 10:21 am (UTC)Starting with the new voice over... it just seemed like the show totally purged John from its memory. He wasnt important anymore. No past scenes...and the biggie, why use his dinky little journal anymore, when you have Bobby around?
The journal kept John alive to the boys... they still NEEDED their daddy. That vibe was completely missing.. and it hurt. I love Bobby to no end, but if Kripke or anyone says surrogate father one more time... I am breaking out a voodoo doll!
They could have at least picked up John;s truck since it was last scene in Lincoln, Neb!! :P
Holding onto hope that things will fix themselves in SPN land and that someone kidnaps JDM and he makes a guest/ghost appearance of some sort.

Luckily, in last episode, we had a new glimpse of John Winchester and His Many Secrets, I hope they keep up with it :D

YES! I completely agree. He's up in Vancouver, dammit, we don't ask for much!
