SPN S03e06: what was the title?
Nov. 10th, 2007 04:12 pmI can't for the life of me remember it.
But anyway.
Reaction under the cut :D
I liked it. I enjoyed watching it quite a lot, and had to refrain from watching it right after the first time, because it was too late, but it was the first thing I did as soon as I turned on the pc today.
I haven't read other people's reaction - I 'm still behaving as to spoilers, go me!
First thing:
Dear Fandom,
it's B. E. L. L. A.
Double L.
Bella.
Bella, means Beauty (as in Beauty and the Beast, and given Dean's recent characterization, well, I doubt it's a chance name, although there could be some mirroring game going on), in fact, it means Beautiful in Italian.
I know the English language has problems in discerning double consonants, but the difference between Bela (as in Bela Lugosi) and Bella is astronomical. Really.
thank you.
PLOT-WISE
I liked the way in which Bella's intents tangle up with the case proper, going back to a more common Urban Legend instead of more demons was a nice change of pace and a welcome (for me) continuity of a kind with the last episode. It seems to me the epiosode flowed nicely, with enough of the boys' interaction to keep me happy and a lighter over tone. The deaths-by-drawning were chilling enough, and there were enough night/dark scenes to counterbalance the sunny, shiny light of others.
I'm a bit unsure of how much of a buffoon with a heart they are turning Dean into, but Jensen manages to keep his character from turning into a guy I don't know, and I trust him. I think first season's Dean was snarky, not clumsy, but hey. Writers and actors and characters evolve, one way or the other.
They do keep pointing at Sam as the 'brain' of the team, which is fair enough, I just wish it was remembered that Dean had been working cases on his own as well.
Also, I like very much that the theme of this episodes was family members bringing about the death of other family members, and how that could turn into vengeance. Chilling, but very much appropriate to Sam and Dean's situation and their feelings.
PLOT-HOLE?
So, at the end, they go for summoning the Sailor's Ghost's brother, hoping that the interaction will save Bella's life, yes? But what is the object that Sam places over the tomb? Is this the problem with the directing that Kripke has mentioned?
JOHN'S JOURNAL
I did see it, right? Sam is reading the Latin invocation from John's journal, yes? YAY!
And hey, we know that John did HUG his boys. There is canon evidence in the Pilot, SW, the photo of the three of them camping/survivalist like on the trunk of the Impala, and Shadows. Uhmphf.
GERTRUDE
Ms. Gertrude Case (Ellen Geer) was FANTASTIC. I loved her interaction with Sam. I want to be a dirty old woman like her! "You're firm all over" and "He wants me", lines to die for. I also think the actress delivered a perfect balanced mix of attitude and genuine liking for Sam. And Jared, oh that boy, he is really finding his funny streak, isn't he? I loved his scrunched, embarassed faces, and his "I'm going to kill you" bitch face at Dean in the dancing hall.
DEAN AND SAM INTERACTION
I love the car's scenes, I do, and I love that they argue animatedly with each other and that they both raise their voices. I loved last time, Iloved it this time. I'd love an ENTIRE episode filmed IN THE CAR, to be honest, the boys stuck in there by some curse or something. It'd be freaking funny.
Anyway, and I'll bold it, because I believe it, Dean didn't made the deal because he thinks his life is worthless, Dean entered the deal for the same reason John did: SELFISHNESS.*
His mother died, his father died, his brother died...Dean doesn't want to be the one last standing. Yes, he is burned out, and yes, he certainly values his family enourmously, it is all he has, in his own words, and becaus eit is all he has, he doesn't want to go without it.
Yes, Dean says that Sam is stronger than he is.
Do we HAVE to take it at face value? Not really. He could be telling that to himself to assuage his sense of guilt for making his little brother go through this all. He wants to reassure Sam, of course, too. But it's not as simple as Woobie!Dean, imo. Not at all.
*there is also Love, in this selfishness, of course there is. Nothing is ever that simple, that b&w.
DEAN AND BELLA INTERACTION
I like the chances that Jensen Ackles gets to have Dean react and express himself to someone else than Sam. The lines are what they are, written to get a certain result. Bella comes across a little wooden to me, and the accent a tad too strong, but in general, I like her presence for the opportunities it gives Dean to react to her.
Are they working towards a Bella/Dean affair?
I think so.
Have someone read and make a list of the "What type of girl Dean needs" fandom's wishes?
I think so.
Do I feel manipulated?
A little, yes, especially since I don't necessarily share the "What type of girl Dean needs" fandom's wishes, and I actually would love to see Jo again, not necessarily as a love interest, simply as a girl out there hunting.
But hey, I suppose that once the barriers between production teams and fandoms are down, some of the above it's inevitable.
I'm pretty sure, too, that the more luminous/colorful scenes we get this season, and the presence of Bella and Ruby (and their type casting as actresses/young women of a certain type of looks) are directly due to studios' pressure: "we have all these female fans, omg! Female fans cooties! Let's put some girls in there so there will be fanboys!"
*shakes head*
But, the writing team, bless them, are still delivering a solid, enjoyable show. And I'm grateful for that.
Let's hope the strike is resolved soon! *sighs*
But anyway.

Date: 2007-11-10 04:47 pm (UTC)and: i totally believe you on the dean selling his soul thing. dean's not that emo, sam might be, but dean's not. he's just all about family and sacrifice and martyrdom.

Date: 2007-11-10 09:37 pm (UTC)Exactly, Dean's not that emo. Of course there is an element of ..lack of selfishness, in making a deal like he did, but lack of selfishness is actually a far cry from lack of self-worth.
:D

Date: 2007-11-10 09:30 pm (UTC)I miss Ellen and Jo, too! I quite like both Bella and Ruby, or better, I like what they bring to the show (Dean's "Can I shoot her?" and Sam's "Not in public," cracked me up. Lots.)

I'm also grumpy-ish today ;)
I think the misshap comes excatly because they used Bela Lugosi as a cover name for her, when first Bobby talks about her, and on hearing, I'm pretty sure Bobby says Bella, not Bela (btw, bela, not capitalised, in Italian, it's also third person present tense of the verb: to bleat/to moo...which makes even weirder for me when I see it..though funnier ;)
I honestly think that it's a spelling issue - as I said, it's a known fact that since English doesn't really have double consonants, and since the pronunciation doesn't help to differentiate much, double consonants almost always get mispelled/mispronounced.
I can swear that Dean and Sam say Bella, not Bela. Someone will have to ask them. I'm being incredibly and obnoxiously nitipicky, I know!!!

But I totally prefer her to Ruby. And I'm afraid I'm totally shipping Dean/Bela :)

Date: 2007-11-10 09:58 pm (UTC)I'm nit-picky, I know, but this one really irks me. :)
Dean/Bella is so going to happen, from what I see. They are just waiting to check fandom's reactions to her, and working towards giving her a vulnerable point and a good reason for being how she is, so that Dean will see another side of her ;)
And hey, anythign that gets Dean naked is good in my book :D

But I doubt it'll happen..but it'd be great!
Now I'll think of her as a boy passing ofr a girl everytime I see her, LOLOL

May I worship you for saying this in bold letters? It seems to me (but it must be a partial impression) that everybody believes Dean made the deal because he thought his life was worhless, which to me seems diminishing to both Sam and Dean. I admit that Dean has self-esteem issues -- and really with people calling him stupid every other episode, I can see where they come from :/ -- but he did it out of selfishness, and he did it out of love.

Date: 2007-11-11 12:40 am (UTC)It's a very VERY wide spread conviction in fandom, that Dean's self esteem issues equals to him being a poor broken woobie with no back spine and no notion of self worth. And I really quite despise it. It's just a battle that I don't care to fight :)
As you say, it is diminishing of both Dean and Sam, to believe something like that.
Me, I'm stubborn and will keep using Bella, because, really, the staff at the CW is not that much good at spelling/linguistic issues.
As I said, if Kripke says it's Bela, I'll sit him down and chat about names etimology and such. Bela is just ridicolous, and the boys say Bella, double L. *nods* Sono un Toro, io, che si vede? ;)
*makes grabby hands for the Winchesters*

Dean's self esteem issues equals to him being a poor broken woobie with no back spine and no notion of self worth.
Well, let them wallow in their mistake, I am very picky about my characterization, so that's a major point that makes me step back from both fics and other kind of fandom media.

Date: 2007-11-13 04:50 am (UTC)Its Bela when they do print interviews, its Bela in script sides, its Bela on the official CW or TV Guide show descriptions.
Bela is a male name, and not even pronounced the same as Bella... but I am thinking her name is short for Izabela, which would explain our issues with it.
Either way... SPN has made it definite that its Bela and its their sandbox... even if they are dumb boys at times. Then again, not one person in the US pronounces Bela as in Lugosi correctly, like 'bay-la', so I can't be a linguistic nazi over it.
I didnt think it was John's journal... the book looked black and not like John's brown jorunal and wouldnt it be ruined in the rain? Then again, it was a dark scene, so I may be wrong.
With all the current and future John bashing planned, I think we are supposed to forget that Dean and Sam ran to their daddy for a hug in Shadows. Doesnt seem likely that it was their first hugs ever and surely you dont go running into the arms of the man who 'abuses' you...so yep, I think we either have to remind them of that, or we have to forget it.
I'm pretty sure they took the title from the old sailor saying: "Red sky at night, a sailor's delight. Red sky at morning, sailor take warning.

Date: 2007-11-13 10:19 am (UTC)Ahh, brilliant, I didn't know that :D
I'll fight for John teeth and nails (and keyboard)no matter what everyone else may say. As you said..."Dean and Sam ran to their daddy for a hug in Shadows." That's enouygh for me :)
Unless they say that's Isabela/Izabela or so on, I'll stand by Bella. (that's also how Dean pronounces it). It's like Donna/Dona, it's the rooth of the name, it's linguistics. The Pope/The Queen/Kripke could mispell it, it's still Bella to me. *G*
(and yes, I'm a Taurus, I can do stubborn ;)

Date: 2007-11-13 07:40 pm (UTC)After seeing other dumb things that Kripke & writers have done... I am not trusting them to know name origin....(until they stop bashing John!).
Since almost all the powers that be are Jewish on SPN, that's why I am leaning toward her real name being the Izabela (the Hebrew spelling), but that is just me looking for logic.
W/o touching on spoilers, all of us pro-John people may need to have a margarita night after eps 8 & 10.
I so want to add that clause to the writers strike... Ms Gamble and everyone else will not be paid for eps that villify John!!

Date: 2007-11-13 08:36 pm (UTC)Not that I circle much in the centres of SPN fandom anyway *shrugs* I LOVE and adore the boys, but I love and adore John MORE. He made them!
Ms Gamble and everyone else will not be paid for eps that villify John!!
*dies* I wish you could add that clause!!!
*goes around fandom being obnoxious and printing Bella Bella Bella everywhere*
I like Izabela, that'd make total sense :)
