Appaloosa
Ohhh, just watched it...and I have/want/need to watch it again asap, cause I am a tad flu-ish and dizzy with flu meds, but ohhh, I liked it, I liked it a lot, one of those rare beasts, a Western based on characters developments, and oh SO SLASHY you wouldn't believe (in the very understated way of slash, but still)...really really liked it, yes, yes, yes.
I mean, Viggo is Viggo, killing moustache and all, LOL and the chemistry with Ed Harris is undeniable. The whole film might have benefit by a tighter editing, but photography was good (some excellent use of colour! and beautiful framing)...buddy themes galore :) and a woman in the midst of it, naturally (R Zellwegger -sp?) which I don't particularly like, was she was good and her character better than usual.

If you've seen it, let me know what you think :D

I went to see Watchmen, I went to see Watchmen..*dances and twirls*

I have a sore throat and I am tired, so thoughtful thoughts will have to wait, but it was a solid, enjoyable film, with excellent rendering of the graphic novel's visual aesthetic and content. JDM was great, the soundtrack was great, and I am looking forward to get the DVD with all the extra stuff that hopefully will be there. :D

WATCHMEN
The Comedian/JDM, yes, but the film, too...wow :)

What are YOU excited about? :D
phantomas: (characters)
Oh gosh it's been a year since I started going out with kiltboy...:)))

house hunting is temporarily waiting on a survey...

family is well behaved, for once, \o/

I desperately need to get in touch with Uni/supervisor and make a decision...don't wanna!

Sunny today :D

Someone should vid Supernatural to the new U2 song ;)

What's happening in fandom? I'll try catching up, but it is daunting...

Have seen My Bloody Valentine! (have I posted about it already?) Jensen was good, the film was better than I expected...3D hasn't changed much.

WATCHMEN THIS WEEK! *dances a dance of joy*

Have been reading the InkHeart trilogy (Inkheart, Inkspell, Inkdeath) by Cornelia Funke...because I went to see the film some time ago, and I enjoyed it enough, and Paul Bettany as Dustfinger made an impression...has anyone else read the books? I find myself wanting to reach for a red pen, because you could easily edit half the pages out, CF keeps repeating the same things over and over....BUT, that said, the world and some of the characters are intriguing enough to make me keep reading.

*hugs you all, goes to browse F-list*
phantomas: (characters)
Films I have watched recently (being snowed in might have had something to do with it):

Rambo (2008): not bad, does what it says on the can...I still only really like the first one and rate that a very good film, but this one gets back to the original significantly, up to and including flashbacks to First Blood.

Jason and The Argonauts (1963)
Has to be seen, because, no matter how special the special effects can be, this is the beginning of it all, and to me, this is still more impressive than the most perfect CGI. I don't find what these first, stolid, imperfect semi-mobile models convey in modern, contemporary special effects. I just don't.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
I never had much liking for superheroes a la Marvel and Dc (I liked Tex Willer much more) until recently, but I always had a soft spot for the Silver Surfer. I am pretty sure I did a some point read a comic or two about him. The film was...bah. Okay, I guess. I like Michael Chicklis and Jessica Alba, but the only bits I really enjoyed where the ones with the Silver Surfer :D

The Punisher (2004)
Does what it says, tells the story of The Punisher, a revenge story...I think I saw solid glimpses of slash possibilities, yes yes, and John Travolta plays a cool, evil, funny bad guy, the supporting characters were good if stereotyped, the lead actor, Thomas Jane..uhm, no. Sorry, but very wooden. Apparently it's a choice? Still...*knocks on him* wooden. Ops *g*

Erik the Viking (1989)
Eeeeh, this was fun :) Dated as to pacing, but still good fun, good casting, inventive film. I enjoyed watching it and would watch it again.

Princess Bride (1987)
"My name is Inigo Montoya. 20 years ago you killed my father. Prepare to die." Ahhh, Mandy Patinkin, you're sooo good :D Hadn't watched it whole before, just bits and pieces, so I was glad I was able to finally watch it all. (Somewhat spoiled by a certain someone mentioning a certain someone else right at the beginning, but apart from that...) Robin Wright is MY Eowyn and will always be, I like her :) And the film is a fun romp from beginning to end, with lots of witty dialogue and silly stuff. But I am sure you all know already ;)

Trumpton (1967)
Okay, not technically a film, but I was intrigued in watching this, which I understand is a children tv classic here in the UK. I found it charming and hypnotic and I am pretty sure there were evil subliminal messages of some kind or another, but still...a lively audience and witty comments made it a very enjoyable watching :)

Drive (1997)
You know what, this was a solid buddy couple, lots of fights and chasing buddy movie, with a quirky female character thrown in mid-way. The film delivers exactly what it promises, and I enjoyed watching it. Mark Dacascos (Crow TV series, Brotherhood of the Wolves, Crying Freeman et al) is cool and funny and fights like hell, and Brittany Murphy plays this crazier than crazy girl I found delicious, and it was a fun watch overall.

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
Eh. FUN. Fun fun fun fuuuun :D Hadn't seen this in aaaages, and yet, it holds the test of time beautifully. Still funny (as intriguingly socially pertinent) as I remembered it. And, it has ALIENS. *ggg*

The Bone Hunter (2003)
kiltboy is in it, and he well knows what a bad film it is, though it's great fun to hear him commenting the film as you watch it...so much so that I sort of started liking tiny bits of it, LOLOL...but no, really. It's BAD. BAAAD BAD. Really BAD. Practically no budget, insufficient story/plot, poor actors trying to squeeze something out of the BAAAD script...the fights are good! *g* Though I really want to see the sequel, filmed in 2006, Axe Riders! Kiltboy finally got a copy, so I will watch it eventually.

I Spit on Your Grave, aka Day of the Woman, aka Revenge of a Woman (1978)
..I watched it because it was mentioned in SPN and I had no memories of it...and I will have to make a separate post for it (and about it being in SPN), because it's late and the the brain is asleep. But I will.

and

HARD CORE LOGO (1996)
WOW.
I mean. WOW. *clings to it and pets it*
WOW.
Loved it :D
phantomas: (characters)
Sorry for the quietness and lack of comments, I'm busy dealing with parents...I'm grateful, though, that we all keep a positive outlook and try to keep the mood up :D

That said, I watched The Outsiders. It's dated in some ways, but still very enjoyable. I have completely forgotten Tom Cruise was in it! And how young Matt Dillon was :) Whatever happened to Ralph Macchio, btw? And Patrick Swayze, and others :) The film would certainly benefit from some music editing *nods*

Looking forward to new Supernatural next week, I should be back in the UK by then *crosses fingers* (quick stop in Norwich and then on to Scotland house hunting). Will try and rewatch the latest eps. Stil haven't watched HCL and State Within :(

I think there was something else...but I can't remember. Hope you are all well!

Watched Get Shorty (distractedly, was finishing knitting scarf for niece) and it was as scattered or too metaphorically convuleted as I remembered.

Also watched Pathfinder, because, uh, Karl Urban is cute. The film's photography was nice to look at, very desaturated and mostly in dark/cold/blueish tones, but really...plot and dialogue, those were left behind. Pity, there was potential.

Scarf finished :)

Didn't write anything. Maybe tomorrow.

State Within
(was pimped a couple of Connotations ago, been on my List since then, there was a Request of a Krycek/State Within crossover drabble..what better reason to watch it? :)

Watched:

1408
(enjoyable, kinda fizzles at the end)

Misery
(Ahhh, James Caan, adorable, and Kathy Bates, splendid, rewatching is is always a pleasure)

Golden Compass
(better than I expected, not having read the books yet, looking forward to next one)

Blues Brothers
(a classic is a classic is a classic)

Inbox still full. Migraine still on. Loving family but longing to be on my own. Wanting to be my own, if that makes sense. *tickles you all*

200-plus emails/comments in my inbox....*facepalms* will try and catch up tomorrow.

The Blues Brothers is always, ALWAYS just brilliant. I probably have seen it a hundred times by now but it's always brilliant :)
Random and hyperbole = genius *happy sigh*

My main Resolution for 2009 is to be pro-active.
Not to moan about things, but work for what I want. And enjoy life as much as I can, it is damn short.

Also, check the fiction tags in my LJ, cause my fiction isn't always tagged properly. And I have really written VERY little in 2008 *headdesks HARD* and THIS, dammit, THIS!
*hides*

Well, it's off to look for a diabetes specialist for my father tomorrow, and help brother buying a new pc (old one just died - he needs help carrying, he knows what he wants), but a little writing daily...a little writing daily..a little writing daily. :)
phantomas: (Default)
Headachey.
Missing kiltboy.
Struggling with decisions (I always want to do everything, lol).
Knitting scarf for niece.

Anyway.

Recently watched:

Inkheart: reading the book now, to see how it compares to the film. The film was pleasant, couple of entertaining hours, Paul Bettany's character (Dustfingers) was eminently lickable and the slash inclined among us would have no problems in finding subtext to play with, between him and Silvertongue/Mo (Brendan Fraser) and even the Very Evil Capricorn, aka Andy Serkis in brilliant form.

Transformers: I gave up after a hour of film and dozed off, sorry. I liked the big 'bots lots and would be happy to read human/'bot combos and variations, but was headachey already and so...(alos liked whatshisname from TV series Vegas, btw).

Ong-Bak: coool. Basic revenge story, but lots and lots of crazy martial arts fighting. Great fun *nods*

If I were up to it, I'd organize a Krycek-fest. Been wanting one for a while. Anyone willing/interested in participating/organizing/providing ideas?

ETA forgot! and yet it did make a BIG impression: Way of the Gun (with Benicio Del Toro and Ryan Philippe)...ohhh, the subtext there! A sort of modern remake of Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid, in more ways than one, with a great James Caan too! One I will want to rewatch :)

FILM: The Happening
I watched The Happening, yesterday night (couldn't sleep, damn), by M. Night Shyamalan, and once again, I truly enjoyed it! It's not about twists or horror, with him, it's just that he tells damn good solid stories. I like all his films. They are pretty, they grab my attention from beginning to end, they always start with a 'what if' and then follow through. It gets my seal of approval!

Season CARDS!!!
I wasn't going to send them but I decided to do something proactive and bought some with a donation to the MS UK Society and, after all, you people are such a solid, funny, maddening lifeline of sanity at times (the usual suspects and everyone else!) Sooooo, if you'd like a card from me in the UK (won't be in Rome on time), leave me a note here with your addy! Because, all those I had, are in The Other Computer. The One That Is Still Here and Not at The Pc Lab. The One Still Broken. *nods*
Comments, of course, screened.

Note to self:
The Quiet... Unusual US drama. Liked it. Femme slash, definitely and worth a fandom, methinks.
Freedom Writers...TRufax film, hence interesting, but even if I like her, Hilary Swank plays it banal here.
Death at a Funeral (UK, 2007)  quite quirky, well worth watching
Silk...OMG SO utterly BORING
Borat...funnier and better than I thought!
Kramer vs. Kramer..classic
Il Cacciatore di Aquiloni ...interesting, book and film, with some predictability
2006:Anno eccezionale...another rare sci-fi sort-of Italian film, and somewhat funny with it, I liked it
Mouse Hunt..ADORABLE! Under-rated, a lot!
(Thai film with elephant)
The Crow ...well, a classic, and always great
Open Range (not finished watching :( western..bad me, bad! Was tired/sleepy :(

I am so bad! roughly 50 or so emails/comments to reply to, I'll get to them tonight if it kills me, promise, and sorry for the delay.

Meeting my supervisor today so look at me running around and screaming, point and laugh as much as you want :)

I watched American Venus and The Investigation because Nick Lea was in them. They were happy *g*  erm , no, okay :) They were so-so although interesting in their own ways, not a lot of Nick, but will take what we can :)

I received LARAMIE this morning! I can't watch it till tonight! *stab-stab-stab* yup, I have no filters of moderation whatsoever. :)

Oh, and any Scott Bairstow (Harsh Realm, Wolf Lake) fans around here, you can go and watch his first live performance HERE.

How come I am so much happier when I misbehave, lol
phantomas: (Default)
Randomly in the past days (week?)

Watched Wall-e. Beautifully done, especially the beginning, which is pretty much the saddest, most heartbreaking scenario I may have ever seen, and it goes on to be okay overall. I am much amused by the studios necessity of making Wall-e a 'male' robot and Eve a 'female' one (the metaphore about the green leaf 'pulsating life' inside of her...not subtle), otherwise we would have robotic m-preg *sighs* /a no-holds barred buddy couple, where the other partner is worth more than the 'DIRECTIVE'...
I enjoyed it but I regret Pixar selling out to Disney.

I just re-watched "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" with Nick Lea. Oh, how gorgeous he is (and good in the part too)...I don't like the film ending as it does! But it's a feast for screencapping and Nick does angst so well :D

VIVIDCON vids are popping up! YAY!

Connotations! Slash con in October in Newcastle, with Gruboid smut!!! And other fun activities and lots of fan chatting ;)

What else...read and posted links in [community profile] papawinchester for a few John-related stories. I miss John. I am avoiding spoilers for the new SPN season (mostly) but I'm sorry to say I feel a bit detached from it all.

Work is going so-so and I'm getting irked by the little things. It's sunny outside. Watchmen better win the lawsuit 'cause I want to see it!

Decided to delete the rant I typed about stuff about women. It bored even me and I see no future in which these issues will be solved to any degree. But everything that's wrong in the way women are represented in US telly can be found abundantly represented in Two and a Half Men (irkingly, it's also funny, damn).

I may have had too much coffee today. I'm on a warpath with myself, LOL (always start with the biggest obstacle/enemy, the little ones can be crushed later!). And links were too hard to put in this entry.

Also, I'm reading a Bruce Lee biography. Will need to look for those 60s 70s kung-fu films I grew up with.

*wishes for a dragon to come and fly me away*...
*waits for said dragon*....

...never one around when you need one, uh?

You take care, people :)

ETA: I forgot! how could I? Thanks to [profile] biani mentioning iOffer, I may have accidentally acquired the whole series of Laramie, Garrison's Gorillas and The Quest...erm. *ggg* *hides* old, VERY OLD TV series! Which I loved!
phantomas: (Default)
...and the fun world of re-enactment :)
If I ever thought fans were crazy (and in a way, we are), re-enactors are just as crazy!

Had a great time, enjoyed the fighting very much, discovered that I can actually buy a small cannon I could drag after me on a leash (I only need to get myself a license), somehow ended up buying myself a cape, a shift, a glass goblet, a clasp for the cape, beef and fruit jerky and MEAD! never had mead before! It's just delicious :) also received a two-heads celtic horse pendant, a mini cannon and mini cannon ball (with which I played already, involving some complex revenge inflicted on my Lurtz action figure...erm...)

Anyway. I had much fun :) The Tintagel castle is breathtaking - well, there is little left of it, but its location is just on the brink of the sea and the sky and the rocks and it's wonderful. Pics asap.

Starting to get back into the swing of things, especially studying, and I managed to watch TDK last night: the Joker was, indeed, amazing, and also the best thing about the film, imo. Great action, but too much of it, and little characters' interaction...and I'm sorry, but the Batman's voice made me laugh all the time.
And there was GREAT INJUSTICE, TOO!  NO WATCHMEN TRAILER!!! *wails*

Read "The resurrectionist" by James Bradley in the train. The whole is interesting  and I liked the setting, but  it sort of wanders off  mid-way to turn into some sort of philosophical digression and  it tapers off blankly...worth reading, but  I don't feel it achieves its full potential. However it contains the  three most disturbing pages I  have EVER read in my life,  the  content enhanced by the very effective  scarce and  concise matter of fact  narrating voice.

Anything I miss? Has fandom imploded  once again ?

There is a distinctive LACK of  Krycek and John Winchester around here, people! It's a tragedy!!!
Will get to reply to email and comments asap:)
phantomas: (Default)
..by the coward Robert Ford"

What a beautiful, suggestive film, slow-paced but dense with nuances and atmosphere and gorgeous photography. I quite loved it. Something that needs a certain mood to be watched, I think, it's introspective, a study on character, on fear, on detached narration, on choices, on the subtle line between hero  worship and mania...I have no idea if there is any historical accuracy to the story, I know the script was adapted from a book. I'm glad I watched it, and I will again.

In other news...no work done at all today :(
I got stupidly stroppy over nothing, the wonderful weather tempts and taunts me, I felt a bit lonely and the anti-allergies stuff I am taking (second year that this happens, I get mosquito bites all over my legs and it's either meds or cutting my legs off) makes me dozy.
/whining
*g*

Dark Knight tomorrow! yay!
phantomas: (Default)
There are somewhat cool spoilers about Supernatural floating around for those so inclined. I had a quick peek :)

OMG, people should look and delight in the restyling of the Watchmen site:

http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/

Most especially...people SHOULD CAP/GRAB that pic of the Comedian used as background! Because I can't! Jeff is going to rock that role SO badass-ly!!! LOLOL (everytime you click on the menu' and then go back to the main page, there will be diff backgrounds - also, the site has a loud, vocal crowd-shouting background just so you don't jump as I did. It can be switched off though).

Wanna see The Dark Knight! Wanna see the Watchmen trailer, which is available on the site, but I can't see it ! *wails*

ETA: thanks to lasamy and thandie, I HAVE WATCHED the WATCHMEN trailer and I am running in circles and squeeing like a squeeing squee macsqueee thingy! JEFF IS SO GoING TO BE GREAT AND THE FILM LOOKS AMAZING, the comic come to life!
phantomas: (Default)
The Dark Knight opens so very soon, a matter of days...and there will be a trailer for Watchmen, apparently...:D
(Maybe I can synch my thesis up with Watchmen and use it as motivation....)(whatever works!)

phantomas: (Default)
Watched this:
http://drhorrible.com/act_I.html

(yep the Joss whedon et al. web thingy :)

Finished reading "American Gods" by Neil Gayman...I loved some of it (the structure, the research, the ideas), was bored to death by other bits. But hey, definitely a WOW read.

Some bumps in RL (guy stuff) but nothing major. :)

Went to see "Hancock" yesterday!! (spelling, ops? *g*) Will Smith gets better and better, and again...parts of the film, great fun and even a little moving, too much camera wobbling seasick type of shooting, other parts (namely, the female character bits) annoyingly very Hollywood-predictable. I am starting to wonder if I will ever see a mainstream US film with acceptable gender politics/representations.
The trailers for Wall-e and TDK are just inviting!
