Don't know if I'll participate, but I will certainly read and comment/engage with the posts in the Month_of_Meta community (on LJ and DW): I can't think of few things better than meta to whet my appetite for fandom :)

Silly me, I just had a Revelation!

about Dean and Hell and Angels in SPN )

And now I will go watch SPN 4.17 :)

Two very interesting meta about parental roles in SPN here:

Definitely more of a rant than meta, I'd say...

I don't know how to say this this without pissing off all the die-hard Dean-girls, but hey, my opinion, take it or leave it : )

Strangely enough, this episode didn't break me as I feared it would.
I mean, it's a magnificent episode.
And it says some very important things, obviously, from the writers' pov, which isn't mine.

My thoughts on Dean and John in Dream a Little Dream......let me show you them *snaps fingers* )

I'm awake at 3.27 am.
Fantastic.
Not.

TV
Anyway, I'll take this chance to squee a little on the fantastic and totally slash love story between Lucius Verinus and Titus Pullo in Rome...I've said it before, it's just incredibly satisfying to watch and it seems as if the writers have written it so that slash writers can fill in the gaps and explain what happens to them/between them. In another life, I'll buy the DVDs and fill in all the gaps. Yes. *nods firmly*
Also, Titus Pullo, when lying in bed all hurt and filmed from below, resembles Gibbs/Mark Harmon from NCIS a lot. I swear. I saw it. Eyes and nose and coloring. Speaking of NCIS, it is such and enjoyable show to watch, I love all the characters, and after catching some Dark Angel today, really, M. Weatherly hasn't aged at all. Not fair. He's good. Me likes. Although, Alec/Ben/Jensen Ackles was better incredibly good as well. Loved his hair style. Which reminds me (Alec, not his hair style), of the really, really good (and long!) DA after-the-series-ends sequel written by [livejournal.com profile] alethialia. Now that I know more about the series, I should re-read it.

Also!
The Forsaken
Caught The Forsaken on the telly, and why there isn't any crossover with it and SPN?
There should be. Some tweaking of vampire canon/lore and the brothers Winchesters could meet up with the friends Nick/BrendanFehr and Sean/Kerr Smith, similarly on-the-road on a vampire hunt.
The film isn't very good, but it could be much much MUCH worse, and BF and KS aren't bad at all in their parts. (BF especially, but I might be biased.)

Anyone?

Also!
SPN and Wings
How about... Wingfic as a metaphore (more or less) unconsciously used by female writers to signify the /loss of/purity in the guys we write about, a simile for menstruo, inasmuch as the wings appearance is usually sudden, scary, perturbing, upsetting in more ways then one, psychologically and physically (ie. lack of physical and emotional balance), redefining the guy's self-identity, where the whiteness of the wings couldn't contrast more and recall by absence the redness of the blood of menstruation.*

Thoughts?
Don't run away screaming! Come back! *G*

* discussed by yours truly a while ago in a short impromptu essay type thing for a seminar here at Uni, might eventually become an essay proper. also, see banner at papawinchester for blood+wing effect

Kane and Melissa Etheridge have the same raw intensity, vibrant vitality and bruised anger in their voices. I love it. I'm pretty sure they could sing each other songs perfectly. I wish they'd play/sing something together. It'd be great, imo.

As to Supernatural, I didn't particularly like the Season Two Finale (especially in comparison with the Season One Finale).
I do need to rewatch AHBL part 2, but as to Part 1...

...didn't like it much, and not for the obvious reason )

Something I've been mulling over for a while.

Whereas I quite like most if not all of the female characters in SPN, Layla especially, but also Sarah, Jessica, Mary (although, uhm, I hope they don't fall into the 'making it all her fault' trap...we have to wait and see), Ava (loved Ava!), Ellen, Jo (I like Jo!)...

Carmen was the most clear signifier of Dean's experience being just a figment of his imagination.

A not-to-miss meta on John Winchester, his character, his motivations and the differences with his sons, based on Roman (and Greek) qualities. Fascinating, and very true to the character:

I watched (yet again) the Return of the King tonight. Not all of it, it was on as I was having dinner - it got me thinking about dysfunctional family dynamics and father&sons:
Denethor, Boromir and Faramir on Gondor's side, John, Dean and Sam on the Hunters side.

The obsessed father, somewhat on the tyrannic side, even if his knowledge/skills are undisputable.
The first born is the Good Son, the one that obeys his father in all.
The younger son is the Rebel Son, the one that chooses the way of knowledge more than that of arms.

Yes, there are differences, of course, I'm not saying that they are equal in all...still, it's an interesting parallel, in what these fathers ask of their sons, in what they are willing to lose, in what finally takes them to the brink of insanity...where, once again, Love&Family is the redeeming feature, in John's sacrifice, in Denethor's failure...

*ponders*

In a huge leap, I'm reminded of Stuart's words at Vince's mother in season 2 of QaF UK:
[putting her hand on his crotch after kissing her] "See? No blood. But when there's blood.."

Okay, I can't remember the exact words, but the gist was that when there was 'blood' [equating it to the blood pulsing down there=a stiffy], it was messy, it was dirty, it wouldn't go anyplace good, not really, and that's why he wasn't having sex with Vince...

..and that image/line/concept makes me think of us slash fans, and the dysfunctions in the Gondorian Regents family and in the Winchesters, and how we turn the blood and harshness of their life into sex (incest), because it's messy, it's dirty, but it's also love. Love that binds forever.

*goes away to ponder some more*

There's great meta and research by [livejournal.com profile] vaznetti, HERE, and [livejournal.com profile] researchgrrrl, HERE, respectively.
Don't miss it.
This show rocks. Its fans rocks just as much :D

To anyone considering John a bad, abusive, cold father...go and re-watch Nightmare. Look at Max Miller, what he said, how he felt, how he suffered and lost his mind. Look at Sam's face when Max asks him if he knows what it means to see hate in your father's eyes when he looks at you, and Sam answers in a whisper that he doesn't.

Listen to Sam's words to Dean when they get back to the Impala, after Max has killed himself.
"We were lucky to have Dad," and "a little more tequila, a little less demon hunting, we could have Max's childhood" and "all things considered, we turned out okay, thanks to him."

Watch that, and tell me that John is canonically an abusive father. Because he isn't. Not the best father, I agree, over-protective, anxious, uncommunicative, yes, and more... but not an abusive father, or an uncaring one.

Note: of course, AU scenarios are not considered in this argument :)
