phantomas: (enchantment)
I never thought I would get here, but you know what? Some fans in SPN fandom REALLY PISS ME OFF.

I DIDN'T LIKE OR DISLIKE RUBY, SHE WAS JUST A CHARACTER, BUT NOW? NOW AFTER SEEING ALL THE HATE, I HOPE SHE STAYS, GETS REDEMPTION, MARRIES SAM, NO, WAIT, MARRIES BOTH DEAN AND SAM AND HAS THEIR BABIES AND THEY ALL LIVE TOGETHER HAPPILY EVER AFTER, ALL IMMORTAL BY DRINKING HER DEMONIC BLOOD! *

Just to spite the haters. There, I feel better now, LOL

Oh, and John Winchester gets revived somehow, and keeps driving and fighting monsters, Saving People, Hunting Things, and maybe meets a certain one-armed Russian spy in search of a temporary hiding place...erm...what? :D

* I am unspoiled so I don't know what is going to happen, but I am so sick and tired of seeing hating on characters in such a crass, petty way and mostly because of their gender. Disliking is something else, I too dislike some characters, but there is a limit and a decency, and no, I don't think Fandom is SRS BSZ, but decency is.
phantomas: (characters)
Definitely more of a rant than meta, I'd say...

I don't know how to say this this without pissing off all the die-hard Dean-girls, but hey, my opinion, take it or leave it : )
phantomas: (trees phan-blue)
Do you remember the 'Being Human' BBC show? There was a pilot, and it was liked, so fans made noises, and now there's a mini series being produced...however...some changes have been announced: READ MORE HERE. Mah. I can't say I am convinced it's for the better. Will wait and see. At least, we keep the cute werewolf :)

Siblings...what to say. I have one I sort of want to rattle and shake, because the world revolves around her, you know? And I have to come from England to do stuff that she could do...*grrrrrrrrrr* (I HAD to come at first because the situation was critical, two weeks ago, but then I am once again presented with how absent my sister is, and how much she keeps asking and asking and asking for all sorts of things, when my parents are barely able to look after themselves, not to mention mother has been diagnosed as 'non respondent to therapy' and father has come up with diabetes...

When I catch up with SPN, I will do proper thoughts posting. In the meantime, John Winchester is still the best, and I have no problems in figuring the following )

me, trying to get back into stuff...have email and comments to rep to, but be assured: THANK YOU. Your support has been most important to me.

ETA: ah, the joys of having semagic again...anyone remembers where to find the settings info so that I can post directly to LJ and JF, all in one go? I'm drawing a blank right now - have to go cook dinner.

My interest in watching Jericho lies mainly with D.B. Sweeney appearing in it, and a certain lust fondness for Skeet Ulrich.
So, yes, I 'm happy that they got seven more eps to tidy up the storyline, for narrative completeness and for the die-hard fans.

BUT. RANT about Jericho 02 01 )

I love how the Uni yo-yos up and down, left and right and so on...they say one thing on one side, another from the other side.

Brilliant.
Question is, wouldn't it be just so much easier for me to just give up?
Why don't I damn DAMN DAMN just give up.

Good series, worth watching, very nice looking-acting DD.

Guess I should take it and my sobbing-my-heart-out every time I see an episode and let them trash it out to the bitter end, so to speak. Sooo dramatic. I hate having issues. Hate it.

"Warner Bros president of production Jeff Robinov has made a new decree that "We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead". This Neanderthal thinking comes after both Jodie Foster's The Brave One (even though she's had big recent hits with Flightplan and Panic Room) and Nicole Kidman's TheĀ Invasion (as if three different directors didn't have something to do with the awfulness of the gross receipts) under-performed at the box office recently."

click above for more. seen at [livejournal.com profile] stele3 and [livejournal.com profile] missyjack's journals.

I very rarely swear. And when I really feel like it, like now, it comes out in Italian. I'll spare you. But It doesn't really surprise me at all, because I haven't seen good, intelligent, well made and directed female characters in AGES, if ever. They keep proposing female leads that are mimicry of male leads, females super-hero with more hair than clothing, and they (the general Hollywood film/tv industry) have NO EFFING IDEA of how to write decent female characters.

*growls*

ETA: thanks to omgwtf_dfw - who provided me with a link to an email form to contact a WB customer service (http://www2.warnerbros.com/web/main/help/customer_service.jsp), I emailed them and just received this reply:

"Hello,
Thank you for your email. The claims being made on blogs regarding Mr. Robinov, Warner Bros. and female casting decisions are untrue. Our 2008 film slate, which includes at least three motion pictures with female leads and casts, underscores our commitment to telling good stories regardless of gender.
Thank you,
Warner Bros. Customer Service"

I'm...highly disturbed by the reaction to the news re: SPN.

I'm disturbed, and irked, and upset, and it's been coming for a while now, and it's not just about SPN, or fandom. It's about being a woman, and how little that seems to mean for the main distributors of media content in the Western world, aka Hollywood/big american networks/certain high level fashion designers.

We are NOTHING. Pieces to be assembled in a normative mainstream 'pleasant' way.
Boobs not big enough? Have surgery.
Nose too long? Have surgery!
Blonde is better? Dye.
God forbids you have FEMALE shapes, aka CURVES: STARVE YOURSELF!

Be INVISIBLE.
Be SMALL.
Be TINY.
Be BLONDE.
Be FRAGILE.
Be BOYISH.
Be UNINTRUSIVE.
Be HALF-NAKED/ON SALE all the time.

It's a business.
And it saddens me, that this is the pressure we're under, that so many of us comply with it because that's the way to be famous, to get work, that so many of us comply with it and join in the 'attack the woman' game.

Necessary disclaimer: I was born blonde. I've been blonde until my teens, got darker after that. I've dyed my hair all sorts of color, blonder and blacker and all the reds in between, and now it's pink-ish. I have a small frame, and I've been quite small and slim until my thyroid stopped working, so now I'm a lot bigger, curvaceous, voluptuous, chubby, whatever however you want to say it. I LIKE it. I like myself. I like my short legs, I like my potato-like nose, I like my big breasts that make it impossible for me to wear a shirt (and half of the clothes available to buy).
I like that women can be and ARE all different from each other, and yes, some are more beautiful than others, some are taller, some have a bigger, whiter smiles, some have lovely perked up noses, but DAMN.

We don't do this to MEN, do we? Not as much.
I wish we would have more respect for ourselves, for our FEMALE bodies, in all their variety.

I appreciate the Dove: Campaign for Real Women, because even if it's business, at least we get to see different body types and colors.
And I'm grateful for British television, where you can see a variety of women (and men) working as actors, representing humanity as it is and not as an abstract group of empowered people maintains it to be: a stereotyped, restrictive, theoretical idea of a human being (aka Barbie).

I watch it. Because I like a few things about it, and those I like really very much.

Friday 13th. It figures.
I can't make it to Wincon UK.

[insert VERY pissed off phantomas here]

Not only a waste of money (will pay my share of the loooong booked room, of course) but not meeting great people I SO wanted to meet.

Damn but this is a shit of a week, really, to top off a couple of very shitty months.
Thank you, Life, you win again.

It's totally not fair that I'll have to download the new SPN ep tomorrow/friday/as soon as it's available and then watch it all on my own and what will I do, avoid all the squee of Thursday night? Spoil myself totally by reading all the comments? Or what?

It's one of those days, brought to you by that time of the month and two very long months on my shoulders. Humphf.
*pouts, has a temper tantrum*
*is tired*

Boring and related to academic life and celebritities, and trust when I say I'd've never believed to find myself saying this, but damn!
To spare the flist )

ETA: Oh, since I'm on a rant, let's add this too: LJ users who don't read community rules/LJ userinfo pages. There was a mod announcement on the vidding list only a week or so ago, asking people not to post graphics with their links to the vid...how many do you think still do it? *growls, very very loudly*

Uhm...maybe I should cheer myself up a little *G*

..but hey, it's been a bad day overall anyway.

...am I the only one really annoyed by the principle behind the Big (insert fannish activity of your choice) Meme thing going round?

Is anonimity necessary to feel able to give feedback? All those that are leaving feedback - and yes, I browsed the entries and I saw some were in fact commenting with their own username, so not everyone is included in my observation, of course - where are they when a writer/vidder/icon-maker etc. etc. asks for non-anonymous feedback?

Is the mentality of 'taking' without any intention of at least saying 'thank you' so percolated, so indelebily imprinted in fandom, cross fandoms, to make anonimity something to look forward to, something to grant in order to have people expressing their own opinions?

I never appreciated authors (whether writers, vidders or icon-maker or any other active fan) pretending feedback and/or comments - I assume we have all seen the 'tell me you liked if you want to see more' and its endless variations.

But I have never also appreciated those who take this fannish production for granted.

And now anonimity? There should be a balance, in my opinion, a simple observance of respect between fans. No one can leave feedback or comment on each single fan produced item she comes across, of course. But that ANONIMITY be considered necessary in order to receive comments and feedback...it makes me sad.

I write, I do icons now and then. I don't vid yet, but I hope to one day. I never expect feedback and/or comments if not from those whom I already consider friends, and at that, not even from them. Sometimes, an unexpected comment does make my day, and I am grateful to the person that took time to read/look at my work and tell me her opinion. Feedbacks and comments certainly are important, but I don't expect them.
But, when I read a story I like, when I see a vid I like, an icon I like, yes, I do try to leave 'something'. Not always a thoughtful, five-pages long critique, but again, even a simple 'thank you' seems the very least for someone who has chosen to share her work with me/us.

This is the currency of fandom, the very essence of it, isn't it? Sharing.
Sharing the excitement and emotions for a new episode in our favourite series, our disappointment in how a story or character turns out, sharing the pics of our favourite characters/actresses/actors, sharing our writing, to the point of co-writing...sharing. Without sharing, there wouldn't be ANY fandom, I'd imagine.

Since when sharing needed untold names? Since when opinions are tainted with the curse of crit, as if critique is the worst possible thing that could happen?

All rethorical questions, of course. Someone is way more sensitive than someone else. Perish the thought of offending someone - though short of using insults, saying 'I liked' or 'I didn't like' was never an insult in my book (especially when followed by a '..because...') and offering a personal opinion shouldn't be seen as potentially harmful.

Oh well. I do understand the curiosity in those asking for comments, I don't mean to put them down at all, and at the end, better an anonymous comment than no comment at all, right?

But it's sad.
I find it really really sad.

Yes, I have a bad temper.
A horrible, awful Taurus temper.

I keep on going, I swallow bad things down, I try to mediate, I sit on my hands instead of emoting, I try not to create conflict and I have spent (literally) months trying to mediate and find a solution to difficult situations. I try in good faith, always have, always will. Mistakes I certainly do, I'm far from perfect, but at least I honestly try.

On the other end, though, when I'm fed up, I'm fed up. End of discussion.

Right now, this Taurus is snorting FIRE.

But I still have way too much class to waste my time with the much adored backstabbing and self-pitying and self-victimizing some people do. Got better things to do. Life is so short :)

Italian is not the most spread language in the world, I understand that..but if your script requires characters that are actually assumed to be Italian and expected to talk in that language...why the HELL can't producers find someone that can actually speak Italian?

I can't say if this happens with other languages, but it's really annoying. And Lost is but the last in a long list of language mistakes both on television and films. One can't pretend perfection, I understand that, but from productions with means...yes, one does.
